Flooring can
be both fun and inventive, adding interest to a
space. In many projects, the
floor is the most prominent concentration of color and a
unifying factor for the surrounding area. It becomes an important aspect of the
total project canvas upon which to build.
New
materials are being found every week. Currently, the
trend in wood flooring is bamboo, a sustainable material
used in “green design”, that regenerates in a short
period of time. Also available, and eagerly sought in
the residential market, are recycled wood planks from
barns or restorations. Other unique flooring materials
include glass, metal and leather tiles. Used as accents
in low traffic areas these materials add highlights to
your installation.
In addition to the
ever-increasing list of flooring materials is the
resurgence of old materials in new installations. Mosaic
tile has had a revival and can be found in both wall and
flooring applications. The introductions of water jet
cutting and new firing methods have added new life to an
old art. Today’s tiles come in every color imaginable as
well as new luster, iridescence and textures. Tile
mosaic floor patterns add an element of nostalgia and
fun, the patterns can be traditional or contemporary
depending on the space and application.
The
current use of poured concrete as a flooring material
has reintroduced the use of terrazzo. Popular in
churches and malls for it’s long wear and easy
maintenance, terrazzo can be poured in traditional
angular patterns as well as intricate curves. The size,
color and density of stones used, as well as the
background color can be selected to suit the interior
design and color palate.
New carpet backings and
innovative patterns allow the designer many
opportunities to design more freely. Manufacturers are
coordinating colors and patterns to enhance design
capabilities. Loop and cut/loop manufacturing has
advanced to allow more intricate patterns and textures.
Patterns now include various colors, textures and pile
heights in the same carpet. In addition, the carpet tile
industry has grown and can be used in conjunction with
broadloom. In closing, the floor
should be considered a major part of great
design. | |
